Closer to home but even more sci fi is Finder, my next recommendation. It's an actually genuinely surprising and deeply original far future science fiction epic. I'm going to come right out and admit that the Finder series is my favorite currently ongoing independent comic bar none. Happily, Carla Speed McNeil serializes her works in progress for free online!

The Finder series is about the various adventures of Jaeger Ayers, a man with a bit of the trickster to him who by vocation can't help but solve problems and make new ones wherever he goes, and his extended quasi-adopted family*. They tumble through McNeil's richly imagined landscape on fascinating adventures, creating dream-movies, fleeing angry monks, hiding terrible family secrets and barely noticing how strange and wonderful the world around them is.

In their far future, unnamed years off, lion-people and dinosauresque beings live side by side with humanity. And humanity has grown to include genetically engineered miniature ethnic groups, or clans, with features shared within a clan being as simple as the strong resemblance in personality and appearance between members of the Medawar clan or as interesting as the fact that all members of the Llaverac clan appear to be - and choose to publically present as - women, even the men.

The world of Finder isn't the typical super high-tech future or the equally typical apocalyptic or post apocalyptic future. Instead, all signs point to it being sort of post-post apocalyptic. Our world, two eras of history later, where a bustling, flawed, multicultural society thrives in domed cities they don't fully understand, with science far greater than our own, but less than what preceded them.

Meanwhile, the Ascians, a nomadic tribal society no less complex or fascinating than the dome-dwellers, live mostly in the blasted but recovering lands outside the domes and basically think everyone else is crazy. They may well be right.

In my opinion, one thing that makes Finder particularly great, aside from McNeil's great characters and strong worldbuilding, is the fact that she always tells a satisfying complete story. The world and many of the characters may be the same, but Finder really is a series of linked tales with beginnings, middles and ends, instead of one of those beautiful giant super-epics that reach 700 pages with no resolution in sight. (Not that those aren't wonderful, but sometimes a person would like to get answers as well as questions.)

Occasionally not safe for work, but in an R-rated movie that makes adult jokes way, not an NC-17 fanservice way.

Dark Horse has announced it will be publishing Finder and a good thing too. I can't think of a more deserving series.
