Comics that deserve more press - Prince of Power 1-3 of 4

Prince of Power is badly titled and non-existently marketed. The protagonist is the sidekick to a third tier Marvel hero who hardly anyone reads anyhow. And you know what? That's a criminal shame.

As of twenty four hours ago, I didn't know who Amadeus Cho was either, aside from a vague inkling he was somehow connected to Hercules. Apparently, I've been missing out on a lot.

The Prince of Power miniseries from Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente picks up with Hercules banished, well, somewhere, and presumed dead. Presumed dead by everyone, that is, except his heir and sidekick Amadeus Cho, an angry, brilliant seventeen year old attempting to literally move heaven and earth to save him.  Cho is the CEO of his own megacorp and about thirty seconds from technical supervillaindom. He's almost entirely a creature of pure wish-fulfillment, and yet somehow the creators are so good that they make him so addictively fun that I have a burning desire to read about 200 more pages about him right now.

The real key to Amadeus Cho is that he's the seventh smartest man alive. That's enough to make him off-the-scales brilliant to the point that the Olympian gods have taken an interest in him, yet there will always be at least six people smarter than him. He can easily forge his way into the depths of the Egyptian underworld and defeat giant monsters in his corporate headquarters without breaking a sweat, and yet an arrogant little Norse demi-god can still best him at every turn. He's amazing, but not so amazing that he's obviously going to win. He's arrogant, snippy, high-handed and more than a little bit of a drama queen, but he's so ferociously loyal to his fallen friend that you know he'll retrieve Hercules or die trying. I've never read Marvel's Hercules, but if he's worth even half that I know I'm going to love him.

The writing is so sharp that it even makes exposition, giving all the backstory you could possibly need in the form of sly, dry asides and passive aggressive office memos. And that's before you even hit the plot - which, while a fairly basic quest narrative, is carried off with irresistable verve and momentum.

I'll definitely be reading Prince of Power #4 out of 4, and I'll almost certainly be grabbing all the Hercules I can get my hands on, not to mention everything else Greg Pak has ever written.

Who is the Norse demi-god in question? Curious minds want to know. Also, is that SEKHMET cuddling up to Thor?

Woman's been hitting the blood beer again hasn't she?

I am vaguely reminded of Sandman!Thor trying to put the bad Viking moves on Bastet.

YES, actually that IS Sekhmet cuddling up to Thor! And hitting the blood beer is totally a plot-point! Well spotted! The comic is an absolute joy.

Sadly, having then gone back and read the Incredible Hercules series that came before it, it's pretty good, but not as good as Prince of Power. It looks like the creators have had a steep learning curve and it has gone up up up. I can hardly wait for issue 4.

I think it is past time to get everybody happy and playing great. If you play great then you play more. Notice how many players that have been given their walking papers recently when or soon after they failed? Kirkman gave up a run. First time, I think cartier jewelry stores.
