Marvel Her-oes 1-4/4 - A comic for actual girls, not women

l Her-oes. Girls definitely do like comics, as witness my teenage years, and it's nice to see a decent comic for younger readers concentrating on superheroines.
It even picked the perfect protagonist for the job, Janet Van Dyne; she's a fashion designer / superhero who looks like a fairy in her super form, what could be finer? Her-oes allows Janet to like clothes and boys without making either the center of her life, or even important to the story, which is really a nice touch. Grace Randolph's writing even manages to give the entire female cast of the book actual personalities that aren't cribbed from the big book of teen movie cliches. Yes, I approve.
But I couldn't get into it.
While the art* is perfect for the job - as spritely and vivid as you could wish - the writing falls down on it a little. The plot was, well, workmanlike. There was nothing wrong with it, it just never felt particularly fun or urgent. Randolph is clearly talented and a writer to watch, the dialogue is done very well, but the story as a whole somehow didn't work for me.
I really want this comic to appeal to 10-14 year olds and sell like hotcakes. What do I know, maybe it will! I haven't been ten for a long time. I've read other books and comics aimed at that age range which really worked for me, but maybe I'm just not on the right wavelength for this particular book. Everything is probably more exciting before you've read your thousandth comic in the genre.
So by all means, buy this book for your daughter or sister or cousin in middle school. But if you're older than that, it may not be for right for you.
*The interior art, not the cover art. The cover art for Issue 4 looked like it belonged to a completely different comic. The tone was off and not only were the costumes different, all of the characters were out of character. How do you even do that with a single image?
