Comics that deserve more press - Young Allies 1-3

Yes, he has horns. This book is amazing. Why am I hearing no press on it? None. A book featuring heroes who are teenagers that is not secretly about Teen Angst™ or, indeed, High School in any form? Wow. Where they're actually competent and not emotionally overwrought or dysfunctional? Double wow. More to the point, it's a new comic and a new superhero team that's just plain good and doesn't feel like a contrived copy of some other team book.
In fact, dirty little secret, it doesn't come off as a team book at all - it comes off as a team-up. The Nomad and Araña superhero variety hour, with a few extra characters tacked on to make it look like a team book so that it sells better. Of course, that's exactly the way I like it - do I really want other characters cutting in on my Araña and Nomad time? Not really.
Okay, I'm going to back up a little here. Rikki Barnes, aka Nomad, was Captain America's teenage sidekick in an alternate universe, and now she's here in ours, being smart, kind and generally no-nonsense. Anya Corazon, aka Araña, used to be Spider-Girl with mystical spider-powers, but despite getting depowered has persevered with brashness and sincerity, remaining both superheroic and spidery. It's something you don't see often - a formerly powered superhero adjusting to the bumps and bruises of mortal life while still fighting crime - and McKeever handles this learning curve with a light touch that's fun to watch.
And they're friends. Really, honestly friends, with shared interests and conversations and a real emotional connection, not the all-too-common phenomena of superpowered kids called friends because they happen to be on the same team. (Hi post-Final Crisis Teen Titans, I see you there!) They just click, the same way Robin and Superboy and Kid Flash do or Nico, Karolina, Gertrude and Chase did.
They go to school together, they patrol together, they actually talk to each other - they're basically superhero partners like Cap and The Falcon or Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. It's pretty awesome.
But the book is called Young Allies, and so, like the other books of this title, one in the Golden Age, one during Heroes Reborn, it needs multiple members including Bucky (Nomad's original hero name, so she counts) and Toro (in the modern day, Benito Serrano.) To round out the "team", which hasn't even officially formed yet by issue 3, throw in Gravity and Firestar, two heroes currently attending college. So far, however, Benito has A) had backstory flashbacks and B) been really strong in his giant bull-like form and Gravity and Firestar have flown around a bit and argued about whether or not killing villains is a good idea. Meanwhile, Nomad and Araña have done most of the, well. Actual heroing.
Benito's backstory - an involuntary child soldier of a Columbian drug cartel given superpowers, who escaped by illegally immigrating to America - has the potential to be really interesting or really problematic. On one hand, child soldiers, drug cartels and illegal immigration are situations rarely explored from the point of view of a sympathetic hero trapped in them. On the other hand, having your Spanish-speaking Central American hero be an illegal immigrant former drug soldier who is literally "Strong like bull" could come off really, really badly. So far he hasn't shown much personality one way or the other, so here's hoping they handle it right when they eventually get around to writing him more.
Young Allies has been pretty strong for a new book, and having the dominant hero-pair of the book be two such cool female characters wins it points from me.
