Movies that deserve more press - The Losers (2010)

The Losers is probably the best example of a movie that deserves more press all summer. And conveniently for you, it just came out on dvd! Do you like action movies of the people-making-quips, ridiculously detailed heist schemes and humorously over the top action variety? Good. Now imagine that precise brand of humor turned up to eleven, and done perfectly. Congratulations, you are thinking of The Losers.
And that's, unfortunately, why it didn't get good press, I'm afraid. No one let the critics know it was a comedy, and without a laugh track or Will Ferrell, apparently they couldn't tell. Philistines.
Basic plot? Oh so basic. Covert ops team sold out and framed* by a villain, back to clear their name. But oh, the style, the plot twists and characters. Sheer action movie gold.
Not sold yet? Just look at the cast. Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I will elaborate.
Zoe Saldana as Aisha, the female lead. And not just a love interest or bland action girl. She'a the mastermind with her own agenda that makes the whole scheme possible. Her fight scenes are also pure, compressed awesome in this film.
Chris Evans. You know, that guy who is going to play Captain America? I had my doubts too, and I still do about his ability to convincingly play earnest, but his amazing turn for the funny as Jensen, the team's hacker and con man proved to me that at least he has the force of personality to play opposite Robert Downey Jr. without getting totally steamrollered.
Idris Elba. Need I say more? Apparently I need to say more. The best actor on The Wire, BBC's Luther. One of the best actors on two legs. Somewhat underused in this movie, but what he's got he plays the hell out of. He's Roque, the team's second, and convinced (with a certain amount of evidence) that he's the only sane man on the team. His relationship with Clay is two parts old married couple to one part vicious knife fight.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Clay, the team leader. You may know him as The Comedian from Watchmen. Also as the memorable demon-hunting daddy dearest John Winchester on Supernatural. Clay seems affable, he seems harmless, the overly relaxed, slightly boozy father of the group, until you turn around and realize he just burned down his hotel room because he and Aisha can't just say hello and make introductions like normal people. And many, many other moments like that. He's a great guy, he loves his people, he'd never knowingly hurt an innocent, and he is an absolutely dog with a bone determined determinator.
And everyone else is great too, but I've never heard of them before and I sort of doubt you have either. 
If you know the scene I'm talking about, you know why this is hilarious.I've said this before and I probably will say it again many, many times, The Losers has the best comic action sequence of all time. Ever.
I don't just mean on film, I mean anywhere. If you have read the first volume of the graphic novel you know what I mean. Yes. That scene. Lifted directly from the comic, done with perfect comic timing, and the added benefit of brilliant musical cues.
To those of you who have not seen the comic, I will only say: You will never listen to "Don't Stop Believing" the same way again. The minute Jensen starts singing it, pause your dvd, put down your knitting, tell your friends to shut up, and watch closely. You are about to see genius at work.
So, yes, the comic. The excellent first two volumes of Jock and Andy Diggle's Vertigo comic of the same name is translated to the screen fairly intact, except for some changes which were either for the better or which didn't bother me. There were two major changes worthy of note.
First, instead of the book's reveal that OH NO, Max is secretly in a huge conspiracy with the US government and hiding (insert laundry list of over the top evil here)**, the movie de-politicizes it by making Max independently contracted evil who just happens to have infiltrated the CIA for his own ends. He consider himself a patriot, but basically, he's a hilariously evil Bond villain. This change simplifies the plot into something which fits into the length of a single movie without huge dangling plot and motivation threads and has the added benefit of allowing us to watch Jason Patric be hilariously evil.
Trust me, you want to see this movieSecond, Aisha isn't from Afghanistan anymore, she's from North Africa because, well. Zoe Saldana is not a very convincing Afghan. Normally I wouldn't be cool with this sort of thing, but they didn't make the character white and they didn't erase her backstory or Muslim-ness, so personally, I'm on board with it. Also, I think Zoe Saldana is the bee's knees, so I may be prejudiced, I admit.
Cutting off after the second volume and ending on a could have a sequel, doesn't need one point very much works for me. No offense to the fine, fine work of Jock and Andy Diggle, but reading the complete series when it first came out, I thought that the book might be suffering from the Battlestar Galactica problem of beginning strong without a clear ending or route there in mind. After a strong, stylish beginning, the comic lost momentum for me, even though I kept reading it to the very last issue.
The movie does not have this problem. I enjoyed every last moment of it, and hung out during the end credits hoping for more. And a good thing too! There are not one but two bonus epilogue scenes during the credits, and they're wonderful.
If you like action movies at all, I cannot recommend this movie enough. So far, it was my favorite of the year.
What are you waiting for?*Yes, I know the A-Team movie did that plot too. The Losers was in development first and also is about twenty times better, despite lacking the amazingness of Sharlto Copley.
**I'm sure the original comic felt very gritty and realistic to Jock and Diggle, but frankly, governments without complete media blackouts and extensive secret police networks have never been any good at keeping secrets that big. Conspiracies like that simply don't work.
