Comics that deserve more press - Widow Warriors 1

Our first view of the Yang family women. They look so harmless!Now, this is a comic that deserves more press. It's still on the stands in comic shops everywhere, so it isn't too late for you to start at the beginning without bothering with back issue bins. Sure there have been a few articles about it online, but it needs all the help it can get because, quite frankly... the comic is from Dynamite. But wait! Don't hit that back button! It doesn't exactly fit the brand image, and that's a good thing.

Widow Warriors is based on the Chinese legend of the widow warriors of the Yang family. A warrior clan, the men of the Yang family fight to the last man, but instead of sending reinforcements, the Emperor tells them to make peace by marrying off one of the widows to the invaders' prince as something like living Dane Geld. This goes over about as well as you might expect, and the women of the Yang family ride off to battle under the command of their elderly matriarch, the indomitable Madame Shen. Battles ensue.

Lloyd Chao and Christine Chi-Long To's writing is pretty spiffy, feeling appropriately formal without lapsing into ye olde period inappropriate Shakespearian English. It's nice to see a legend that isn't King Arthur or Robin Hood get a high quality comic recounting and expanding upon it, and so far they're doing a good job. I'll definitely be reading the next issue.

Of course, to my highly prejudiced tastes there's one glaring problem with this otherwise superb comic. The colorists, while obviously skilled, seem to take the concept that this is a dark comic rather literally. This comic is a symphony of shades of mud. You've got your burnt sienna mud, your sometimes a bit of red clay mud or ochre colored mud - the entire thing is rendered in the various shades of the mucky rainbow. I'm sure it's meant to be atmospheric. They're not exactly pleased about being widows or riding to their possible doom, to be sure. But the effect of it while reading is frequently to blur Pat Lee's linework to the point where squinting is inevitable and confusion is likely.

Yes, that really is an ancient Chinese warrior woman with short blonde emo hair. Yes, it always looks like that in the comic. No, I do not know whyAnd that's not even mentioning the some of character design. Ancient Chinese blonde emo hair, how?

Full disclosure, after I wrote this review, I found out that Pat Lee is apparently rather notorious in the comics industry for assorted fiscal bad behavior. Do with this information what you will.
